Overview

DeSoto® 513X384 Exterior Primer is a high-solids, urethane-compatible epoxy primer developed by PPG Aerospace for protecting aluminum and composite aircraft substrates against corrosion. Designed for exterior aerospace applications, it provides excellent adhesion, outstanding resistance to Skydrol® hydraulic fluids, and compatibility with Desothane® HS topcoats. The primer can be applied using standard non-electrostatic spray equipment across a wide range of environmental conditions and delivers durable performance from -54°C to +177°C.

Compatibility & Safety Notes

• Apply over properly prepared aluminum including DesoGel™ EAP-9, DesoGel™ EAP-12, MIL-C-5541 conversion coating, or chromic acid anodised aluminum
• Mix base and activator thoroughly and maintain agitation during application
• Condition materials to 13-35°C before mixing
• Apply using non-electrostatic spray equipment only
• Ground aircraft and spray equipment before application

Practical Suggestions for Your Team (AOG Mindset)

• Condition both components for at least 24 hours before mixing to achieve optimum spray performance
• Maintain continuous agitation during spraying to ensure consistent film build
• Target 15-23 micron dry film thickness with one medium coat and approximately 50% overlap
• Select induction time based on ambient temperature before application
• Clean spray equipment immediately after use with approved DeSoto® CN20, CN44 or Desoclean™ 45 solvent cleaners
• Observe minimum and maximum topcoat windows to maximise coating performance
