    Information

    Tectyl™ 502-C Corrosion Preventive Compound

    Overview

Tectyl™ 502-C is a premium solvent-based corrosion preventive compound formulated with a soft wax base for the protection of ferrous and non-ferrous metal components during storage and shipment. The coating cures to a dark amber, transparent, soft greasy film that provides long-lasting corrosion protection while remaining easy to remove when protection is no longer required. It is specifically designed for indoor and covered storage applications and complies with MIL-C-16173E Grade 2 Class 1 requirements.

    Key Technical Characteristics

    • Product Type: Solvent cutback soft wax corrosion preventive compound
    • Film Appearance: Dark amber, transparent, soft greasy film
    • Density @ 20°C: 0.88 kg/L
    • Recommended Dry Film Thickness (DFT): 25 microns
    • Theoretical Coverage: 22.2 m/L at recommended DFT
    • Non-Volatile Content: 61% by weight
    • VOC Content: 317 g/L
    • Flash Point (PMCC): 40°C
    • Cure Time @ 20°C: 24 hours
    • Viscosity (DIN Cup No. 4 @ 20°C): 16 seconds
    • MIL Specification Compliance: MIL-C-16173E (1993) Grade 2 Class 1

    Core Performance Benefits

    • Provides reliable corrosion protection during storage and transportation
    • Protects both ferrous and non-ferrous metal components
    • Transparent protective film allows visual inspection of protected parts
    • Easy application by spray or dipping processes
    • Simple removal when protection is no longer required
    • Economical coverage with low film thickness requirements
    • Suitable for domestic and overseas shipment protection

    Typical Applications

    • Aircraft and aerospace spare parts storage
    • Metal component shipment and export packaging
    • Machined ferrous and non-ferrous parts
    • Industrial equipment preservation
    • Gearboxes and enclosed mechanical assemblies
    • Long-term warehouse storage protection
    • Transit corrosion protection for manufactured components

    Material Engineering & Design Features

Tectyl™ 502-C utilizes a solvent-based soft wax technology that forms a continuous moisture-resistant barrier over metal surfaces. The cured film protects against humidity and corrosive environmental exposure while remaining sufficiently soft for easy removal or compatibility with lubricated systems.

    Corrosion performance testing demonstrates:

    • Salt Spray Resistance: 7+ days (ISO 9227 NSS)
    • Humidity Resistance: 40+ days at 100% RH and 40°C (ISO 6270-2 CH)
    • Indoor Protection Period: Up to 24 months
    • Outdoor Covered Protection Period: Up to 6 months

When used inside gearboxes and similar enclosed systems, the coating can remain in place and will dissolve into the operating oil, eliminating the need for removal prior to service.

    Installation & Handling

    • Apply only to clean, dry metal surfaces free from rust, oil, and mill scale
    • Recommended substrate temperature during application: 10°C to 35°C
    • Use product as supplied do not thin
    • Application methods:
      • Low-pressure air spray
      • Dipping
    • Allow approximately 24 hours curing time at 20°C
    • Avoid direct contact with PVC unless compatibility testing has been performed
    • Removal methods include:
      • Mineral spirits
      • Petroleum solvents
      • Hot alkaline wash
      • Low-pressure steam
      • Tectyl Biocleaner for cured films

    Environmental & Compliance Notes

    • Meets MIL-C-16173E (1993) Grade 2 Class 1 requirements
    • Store between 10°C and 35°C
    • Mild agitation recommended before use
    • Best used within 36 months of production date when properly stored
    • Do not discharge product into drains, soil, or waterways
    • Adequate ventilation is required during curing
    • Partially cured films should be protected from ignition sources
    • Refer to SDS for detailed health, safety, and handling information

    Key Advantages for Aerospace Use

    • Long-term corrosion protection for stored aerospace components
    • Suitable for preservation during domestic and international shipment
    • Low film build minimizes material consumption while maintaining protection
    • Easy application and removal reduce maintenance effort
    • Transparent coating facilitates visual inspection of protected surfaces
    • Compatible with both ferrous and non-ferrous aerospace materials
    • Military-specification compliant corrosion protection solution
    • Effective preservation coating for MRO and spare-part inventory programs
