    Information

    HexWeb® HRH-10® Aramid Honeycomb Core

    Overview

HexWeb® HRH-10® Aramid Fiber/Phenolic Resin Honeycomb is a lightweight, high-strength core material manufactured from NOMEX® aramid fibre sheets. These sheets are bonded at the nodes using a thermosetting adhesive, expanded into a hexagonal or OX-Core® structure, and then impregnated with phenolic resin. After curing, the material is sliced into sheets of controlled thickness. It is widely used in aerospace sandwich panel construction due to its excellent strength-to-weight ratio, fire resistance, and environmental durability.

    Key Technical Specs

    • Core Type: Aramid paper honeycomb (NOMEX® based)
    • Matrix: Phenolic resin dip-coated and cured
    • Cell Sizes: 1/8", 3/16", 1/4", 3/8" (typical)
    • Density Range: ~1.5 to 9.0 lb/ft³ (designation dependent)
    • Compressive Strength: ~80 to 2000 psi (varies by density)
    • Shear Strength: Directional, typically ~70 to 500+ psi
    • Operating Temperature: High-temperature resistant; performance reduces near 450–500°F (230–260°C)
    • Flame Behaviour: Self-extinguishing / fire-resistant (FAA 14 CFR 25.853 compliant)
    • Water Resistance: Low water migration (< 1 cell in 24 hours per AMS testing)

    Approvals & Specifications

    • SAE AMS-3711 compliant
    • SAE AMS-81986 compliant
    • FAA 14 CFR 25.853 (self-extinguishing requirement)
    • AMS-STD-401 / AMS-STD-410 test basis (mechanical and water migration properties)

    Typical Applications

    • Aircraft interior panels (floor, ceiling, sidewall structures)
    • Radomes, fairings, helicopter blades, control surfaces
    • Structural sandwich panels in aerospace composites
    • Marine and high-performance sporting goods (boats, surfboards)
    • Thermal and electrical insulation structures

    Key Features & Benefits

    • Very high strength-to-weight efficiency
    • Excellent fire resistance and self-extinguishing behaviour
    • Good impact and damage resistance in service
    • Stable bonding surface for composite skins
    • Good dielectric and insulating properties
    • Moisture and fungus resistant construction

    Processing & Manufacturing Notes

    • Available in hexagonal and OX-Core® over-expanded geometries
    • Can be machined, tapered, chamfered, or formed to complex shapes
    • Compatible with a wide range of aerospace adhesives and facing materials
    • Heat forming techniques available for contoured components
    • Thickness tolerance typically ±0.006" to ±0.125" depending on range

    Mechanical Performance (General)

    • Compressive strength increases significantly with density (approx. 80–2000 psi range)
    • Shear modulus and strength vary by cell size and direction (L/W anisotropy)
    • Standard test thickness: 0.500 inch core reference
    • Density tolerance: ±10% over minimum 100 in³ sample volume

    Environmental & Safety Performance

    • Fire-resistant and self-extinguishing (aerospace certified)
    • Water migration limited under AMS testing standards
    • Stable dielectric properties for RF-transparent structures (e.g., radomes)
    • Retains most strength after thermal cycling within service limits

    Availability & Supply

    • Standard sheet sizes: up to approx. 48" × 96"
    • Thickness: wide range available depending on specification
    • Custom machining and shaping available
    • Supplied via Hexcel global aerospace distribution network
